Road safety campaigner calls for zero tolerance of illegal number plates

A road safety campaigner who is leading the way for ordinary people to tackle appalling driving on our roads is calling for zero tolerance of illegal number plates.

Andrew McGavin is the founder of BetterDrivingPlease.com, a website where anyone can report a motoring offence they have spotted.

More than 7,500 people have been shopped so far. At the end of a national week of action by Police forces called Operation Larch, Andrew is calling for a permanent crackdown.

He said: "It is the broken windows theory in action. In areas where broken windows remain unrepaired, vandalism increases and the crime level rises.

"It's the same with illegal number plates. Someone who perceives they are getting away with having an illegal number plate is much more likely to commit other road offences, such as using a handheld mobile phone or speeding on 30mph roads."

BetterDrivingPlease.com accepts reports from anyone, and puts them through a series of checks for validation. It has a transparent database. That means anyone can search the reports by number plate, location, or type of motoring offence.

Earlier this week, the site revealed it already has 1,000 reports of illegal number plates.

Andrew added: "It has been documented in the past that the Police in New York tackled horrendous crime on the subway with a zero tolerance on fare dodging.

"Over time crime levels decreased - the broken windows theory again. I truly believe a permanent zero tolerance of illegal number plates will improve the general standards of driving on UK roads."
