1,000 drivers shopped for illegal number plates

Just under 1,000 drivers have now been reported to a road safety website for displaying illegal number plates on their vehicle.

They've been shopped by other drivers to BetterDrivingPlease.com, a website where anyone can report and view reports of bad driving across the UK.

It has released details of number plate offences as the UK's Police forces join together for Operation Larch. It's a seven day campaign to catch drivers with illegal number plates. Some forces are worried illegal plates can't be read by automatic number plate cameras, or speed cameras.

The website's founder Andrew McGavin fully supports the campaign. He said: "By displaying an illegal number plate on your car, you are saying to the world that you don't believe all of the traffic laws apply to you.

"And that kind of attitude must surely creep. Before long you can justify to yourself doing 40mph in a 30 zone. It's a dangerous attitude and one which must be stopped."

Typical examples of illegal plates reported to BetterDrivingPlease.com include:

  • Adjusting the spacing between letters and numbers, to create a word or look like a name
  • Using a non-standard font or italicising letters
  • Changing a letter or numbers so it looks like another character
  • Using white on black plates rather than legal black on white/yellow

The idea behind the website is that anyone can report bad driving they see on the roads. More than 7,000 drivers have already been shopped for a number of offences including speeding, using a handheld mobile phone, or dangerous manoeuvres.

The database is transparent, meaning anyone can search the reports by number plate, location, or type of motoring offence. Some reports are accompanied by pictures of offending vehicles. Earlier this month, BetterDrivingPlease.com featured in a primetime BBC1 documentary on appalling driving on Britain's roads.

Andrew added: "The laws are simple and apply to all of us. Displaying your number plate correctly isn't difficult, and BetterDrivingPlease.com is fully behind this crack down."
