BDP Press Release

Monday 28th January 2008 – for immediate release

Every driver can help the Police crack down on illegal number plates

Every driver in the UK has the chance this week to join the Police in a national crackdown on illegal number plates.

They can report plates spotted to BetterDrivingPlease.com, a website set up for ordinary drivers to do something about illegal driving they see on our roads.

Anyone can report bad driving to the site - more than 7,000 drivers have already been shopped.

This week, all of the UK's Police forces are taking part in Operation Larch. It's a seven day campaign to catch drivers with illegal number plates.

Some forces are worried illegal plates can't be read by automatic number plate cameras, or speed cameras.

Andrew McGavin from BetterDrivingPlease.com said: "For people who support the crackdown, this is the way they can join in and help.

"We have publicly offered to pass on all information to any Police force that asks for details of motoring offences spotted in their area."

He added: "There can be no ambiguity what constitutes an illegal number plate. Spotting them, photographing them when it is safe to do so and reporting them to BetterDrivingPlease.com is the best way to support this week's action."

The website's database is transparent, meaning anyone can search the reports by number plate, location, or type of motoring offence.

Some reports are accompanied by pictures of offending vehicles. BetterDrivingPlease.com has benefited from a huge amount of media coverage, including national newspaper and radio reports.

At the beginning of January the website was featured in a primetime BBC1 documentary on appalling driving on Britain's roads.
