Motorway Driving (09/12/2007)

Although the speed limit is 70mph keeping up with the flow of traffic often involves travelling at 80 to 85mph - and this appears to be reflected by the fact that the Police (when they are on patrol) do not tend to pull over such motorists.

If all such motorway incidents in excess of 70mph were reported there would be millions of incidents daily. BDP policy is not to accept reports of motorway speeding - unless seen to be excessive and in dangerous circumstances.

Environmentally there is good reason to enforce 70mph and we have little doubt that this will happen in time - in order to save fuel and emmissions.

However - when it comes to lower speed limits - speeding in built-up areas is totally unacceptable - so that 30 means 30 maximum (conditions permitting) - 40 means 40. Keeping to built-up area speed limits is a matter of respect - a good driver will not speed through your streets and expects that you will not speed through his or hers where their friends or family may be about.

We may all occasionally err by a few mph - but 40mph in a 30, 55mph in a 40, 90mph in a 60mph is irresponsible, anti-social and extremely dangerous.
